What is a DEA-compliant SOP?
A DEA-compliant SOP is a written standard operating procedure showing how your business handles controlled substances under federal requirements. That typically covers security, recordkeeping, inventory control, diversion prevention, storage and destruction. DEA registrants need these procedures documented and followed, not just written. A template provides the required structure; the operational details have to reflect your facility.
Which cannabis businesses need DEA registration?
It depends on your state and license type. Since medical marijuana moved to Schedule III, state-licensed operators have been directed to register with the DEA, and several states have set their own deadlines. Oklahoma growers, processors and transporters must register by January 1, 2027. Check your state regulator's current guidance, or contact CBA.
What documents do I need for a DEA registration application?
DEA's online registration collects business and personal information, your activity type, state license credentials, liability questions, compliance information and payment. Beyond the application itself, operators are expected to have written SOPs documenting the compliance information you attest to.
How long does DEA registration take?
Plan for up to six months of review. In Oklahoma's dispensary registration window, DEA stated review would take no more than six months, and applicants could keep operating during that period. Because reviews run that long, operators facing a deadline should have their documentation ready well before the filing date, not the week of.
What's the difference between state licensing SOPs and DEA SOPs?
State SOPs address your state program's rules, like seed-to-sale tracking, packaging and patient requirements. DEA SOPs address federal controlled-substance requirements: security systems, diversion prevention, inventory reconciliation, recordkeeping and destruction. They overlap, but state SOPs rarely cover everything DEA expects, so most operators need a separate, DEA-focused set.
